The Phoenix Theatre opened on 24 Sept. 1930. It was built on the site of the Alcazar Music Hall, a performance space that had fallen from grace into a casino.

Noël Coward’s *Private Lives* opened the Phoenix Theatre, starring Noel Coward and Laurence Olivier. On Coward's 70th birthday, the bar in the foyer of the theatre was given the name the Noël Coward Bar in his honour.

The theatre’s greatest success arrived in November 1991 in the form of *Blood Brothers*, Willy Russell’s musical. It ran for 21 years, finally closing on 10 Nov. 2012. The Phoenix Theatre was also home to the West End premiere of *Come From Away.*

## Phoenix Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

The seats in the Stalls offer very good views of the stage, with a light rake in the seating helping seats further back. 

The view from the Dress Circle is generally very good, though the rake of the seating is not as noticeable as in other theatres. 

The Grand Circle is surprisingly close to the stage, which is great for feeling involved in the show.

Get ready, ‘cause here they come! Relax at an evening of soulful Motown music in the West End. *Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations* tickets are available on London Theatre now.

The *Ain’t Too Proud* musical charts the rise of the “Classic Five” Temptations members: Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, and David Ruffin. In 1969, The Temptations were the first Motown act to win a Grammy Award for “Cloud Nine.” However, their private lives were anything but cloud nine.

Away from the spotlight, the quintet dealt with personal illnesses and individual vices, as well as personal and political conflicts that jeopardised their future. Follow the fivesome as they take over the music charts, the Motown scene, and ultimately the world.

*Ain't Too Proud* puts the Temptations on the Broadway map. To date, the Temptations have over 40 studio albums, three Grammy Awards, and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So who could write a Temptations story about the Detroit-based group? Call in Detroit-based playwright Dominique Morisseau. She previously wrote The Detroit Project, a collection of three plays including the Tony-nominated play *Skeleton Crew.* Now, she immortalises the Temptations on stage.

Motown and The Tempations are hot commodities. So it's no surprise that when *Ain't Too Proud* premiered in California in 2017, the show extended twice due to audience demand. After performances in Washington DC, Los Angeles, and Toronto, *Ain't Too Proud* eventually opened on Broadway in 2019, and picked up 12 Tony Award nominations. ## What did The Temptations sing?

The *Ain’t Too Proud* musical includes plenty of the number 1 Temptations hits, such as “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone”, and “My Girl.” Add the Temptations songs with Sergio Trulijio’s Tony Award-winning choreography, and the end result is a slick tribute to Motown and 1960s Detroit.

Otis Williams is the last surviving member of the original Motown group. He's honoured in the *Ain't Too Proud* musical. Not only did he collaborate with the show’s creatives, but he still tours with the Temptations today. When the show ran on Broadway, it earned 12 Tony Awards, and on Sergio Trujillo the Tony for Best Choreography. Watch out for all the slick moves during the show. 

To date, 33 singers have performed under The Temptations name. Now, five West End actors add to the legacy: Tosh Wangho-Maud, Sifiso Mazibuko, Mitchell Zhangazha, Cameron Bernard Jones, and Kyle Cox.

## What To Watch For:

- *Ain’t Too Proud* reunites director Des McAnuff with Sergio Trujillo. The pair previously collaborated on *Jersey Boys* and *Summer: The Donna Summer Musical*
- Even though this musical focuses on the Temptations, this show isn’t the first time they’ve been recognised on stage. The Temptations' songs also feature in *Motown the Musical*.
- The book writer Dominique Morisseau was born in Detroit. Coincidentally, it’s where The Temptations also formed. Talk about authenticity!
- One of the current Temptations members, Jawan M. Jackson, previously played Melvin Franklin in *Ain't Too Proud* on Broadway. Perhaps one of the West End stars will join the group in due course?

The Prince Edward Theatre opened in 1930, and was named after the then Prince of Wales, who went on to become Edward VIII. In 1978, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s new musical, *Evita*, made a star of its leading lady, Elaine Paige. Paige then starred in *Chess* and *Anything Goes*, both at the Prince Edward Theatre.

The building was completely refurbished in 1992. Bernard Delfont and Cameron Mackintosh now owned the theatre, and spent over £3 million on remodelling the auditorium, improving the acoustics and increasing the size of the stage. The new Prince Edward Theatre was unveiled in March 1993 with the opening of *Crazy for You*, a Gershwin musical transferring from Broadway.

Delfont Mackintosh Theatres Ltd. continue to renovate the theatre between productions, making the faceight-yearemplary and one of the most desirable spaces in the West End.

## Prince Edward Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – the Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. In the Stalls, patrons will find excellent legroom throughout, and a gentle rake throughout the auditorium allows for excellent views. 

The Dress Circle does not offer the same level of legroom, but again offers great views. The last five rows will have their view obstructed by the overhang of the, Grand Circle. 

The Dress Circle loges are a unique feature to this theatre — they take on the form of individual, tiered boxes but with a direct view of the stage rather than the side-on view usually associated with box seats. 

The Grand Circle offers excellent sightlines as the seats are fairly steeply raked.

Dominic Cooke directs Sophie Okonedo and Ben Daniels in a visionary adaptation of *Medea* at Soho Place. *Medea* tickets are available now on London Theatre.

Sophie Okonedo plays the female protagonist. She brings her visceral, mercurial brilliance to the role, showing the power of women. Okonedo’s longtime collaborator Ben Daniels plays Jason. Together, they’ve starred in *Haunted Child* at the Royal Court. Now, they lead the powerful ancient Greek drama, a play that, according to London Theatre "spellbindingly takes on the patriarchy." 

The *Medea* play sees the title character transform from a lover into a destroyer of love. At first, Medea marries Jason, the leader of the Argonauts.After years of marriage and raising two children — Mermerus and Pheres — Jason leaves Medea for Glauce, a younger princess. In a blazing reaction, Medea sets out on a quest for revenge against the men who abandoned her. The timeless play explores themes revenge, justice, and the consequences of betrayal, all with a focus on women.

### When was *Medea* written? 

Euripides wrote *Medea*. It's unknown when it was written, but early performances date as far back as 431 BC. The 20th-century American poet Robinson Jeffers adapted *Medea* to successful acclaim — Okonedo and Daniels star in a revival of the Robinson Jeffers version.

Don’t get in Medea’s way. She can plot her own revenge, and leave devastating trails of death and destruction. However, the *Medea* play isn't all about heartache. There's tender moments of love, betrayal, and the struggle for power. In Robinson Jeffers's adaptation, *Medea* blends the ancient and the modern for a forward-thinking look into modern civilisation.

## What to Watch For:

- Sophie Okonedo plays Medea. The Tony-winning actress is best known for starring in *A Raisin in the Sun*. She also gave an Oscar-nominated performance in the 2004 film *Hotel Rwanda*.
- Ben Daniels plays Jason. Okonedo and Daniels previously appeared in *Haunted Child* at the Royal Court.
- The ancient Greek play dates back as early as 431 BC. Euripides is one of three ancient Greek tragedy playwrights whose texts survived in full.

Medea - LON - TodayTix

It’s the most unthinkable act in theatre – and yet given a kind of horrifying reasonableness in Dominic Cooke’s brooding production of Euripides’ *[Medea](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/27552-medea)*. Using the intimate, in-the-round confines of London’s most exciting new venue, he ensures we are both witness to and complicit in a domestic tragedy (a husband’s betrayal; a wife and mother’s terrible revenge), although both the amphitheatre-like shape and Sophie Okonedo’s spellbinding performance also give it a mythic quality.

Cooke’s 90-minute, modern-dress staging begins with Jason knocking over a table and chairs and dragging them into the aisles – casual destruction of their home. He has left Medea, and their young sons, so that he can make a more strategic marriage: one to the daughter of King Creon. Having a Black actress playing Medea (who is labelled a “foreigner” and a “barbarian”) makes the description of that golden-haired princess particularly striking.

Power is at the root of this tale. Medea – who was once herself a princess, and a descendent of a sun god – sacrificed hers to help Jason succeed. Now, she is alone and friendless; she betrayed her own family and country for him. Jason seeks power through his remarriage, and seems to resent that he ever needed Medea, while Creon fears her and uses his royal power to banish her: at the start of the play, she learns that she has been cast into exile. If she protests, she’ll be branded jealous or mad. As Okonedo spits out: “It is a bitter thing to be a woman.”

Cooke uses the 1946 text by American poet Robinson Jeffers, which is a wonderful mix of lyrical and wryly colloquial. In parts, this is a surprisingly funny production – one that plays interesting games by making its characters so aware of being watched. After Creon pitilessly demands Medea depart, he pastes on a fake smile for the crowd and protests that he’s “not a tyrant”. Medea hardly needs condemn Jason to us – she simply lets him hang himself with lines like “I must look forward to younger children”, then watches for our reaction.

Our involvement is heightened by having Medea’s nurse (an excellent Marion Bailey) directly addressing us, and by placing three cast members (Jo McInnes, Amy Trigg and Penny Layden) in the audience. They are women of Corinth, and this voyeurism is apparently expected – Medea observes that there are no secrets in Greece. Jeffers’s text is alert to the colonial echoes here: Jason arrogantly assumes he’s done Medea a favour by bringing her to a more “civilised” land; Medea turns that on its head by sneering that these civilised people will engage love for gold, and using that knowledge in her revenge plot.

Cooke also makes the very effective choice to have Ben Daniels play all the men in the story – so making it clear that this is Medea versus not just Jason, but the patriarchy. Daniels shape-shifts impressively with the aid of a satchel or a jacket, added to his military fatigues-like combat trousers and boots, going from the boys’ concerned tutor to an uptight Creon, brutish, blinkered Jason, and, in stark contrast with the latter, a super-camp Aegeus.

Opposite them, Okonedo is initially an exhausted, abandoned woman in a long-sleeved top and baggy skirt. We hear her before we see her: a voice from the floor below (a partially hidden staircase winds up onto the stage) declaring that death is her wish. But, as more indignities are heaped upon her, her desires shift from suicide to justice. It’s not with hysteria but with eerie calm that she decides upon the most painful retribution (killing Jason’s children) and asks Aegeus, not once but twice, “Do you not think that such men ought to be punished?”

It’s a riveting performance by Okonedo, who seems to transform completely – not just through a costume change (into a funereal black gown), or because Medea embraces her supernatural gifts (which were once valued; now, she’s at the centre of a literal witch hunt). We are lured into her way of thinking, only to be shocked back into reality by the sight of her two innocent children – introduced here slurping ice cream cones – and by the agony of Bailey’s nurse in having to recount the grisly fate of Jason’s bride.

Given the intensity and intimacy of the performances, and how the central drama is already enhanced by the reactions of the onlookers (plus striking lighting by Neil Austin), it feels like overkill to add alarms and helicopters to Gareth Fry’s busy soundscape, and in particular the clichéd crutch of an actual storm. The most harrowing moments here are the quieter ones, as we come to understand the inexorable logic of the play, cold and hard as the stone floor in Vicki Mortimer’s raw design – and our role as helpless witnesses, doomed to watch it reach its bloody climax.

'Medea' review – Sophie Okonedo takes on the patriarchy in this spellbinding staging

Over five weeks, 1,000 animators immortalised Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson, and Björn Ulvaeus into state-of-the-art digital forms. Add in visual effects from Industrial Light & Magic — the brains behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and the end result is sublime, defining the phrase "needs to be seen to be believed." 

ABBA are no longer four performers; they’re ethereal beings bounced in from another world, materialising on a 65-metre screen. These highly-rendered beings may not look and feel entirely human: glossy, vacant eyes; a constant beaming smile; and swishing hair can feel disorienting and take a few minutes to get used to. 

But it's impossible to take your eyes off them. When there’s a chance to see ABBA “live” and experience the musical euphoria of generations past, it’s easy to forgive any odd appearances. There’s no denying that the Swedish superstars are in the room. 

It’s a slow buildup, as the lesser-radio-played “The Visitors” and “Hole in Your Soul” kick off proceedings. Once the crowdpleasers start, the pop-fuelled rollercoaster begins and gets everyone up on their feet. Even the slower-paced songs like “Chiquitita” leave the audience waving, clapping, and stomping their feet. 

There’s a 10-piece live band too, including Britpop artists James Righton, of Klaxons fame, and the chart-topping DJ Little Boots (Victoria Hesketh) on keyboards, marrying ABBA and live music. By the time “The Winner Takes It All" hits its crescendo, the audience’s energy could solely power the ABBA Arena’s 291-speaker surround sound system. 

It’s not just the music we should thank ABBA for. Matthieu Debay’s futuristic lights and laser shows transform the arena into a disco rave, and when there’s a break to keep up the illusion ABBA are in the building, Shynola’s two short animations following a hero as they find the band’s legend lift the "Voyage" theme into the stratosphere.

There are a few glaring omissions in the setlist, but with producers confirming additional songs were filmed for the concert, it’s only a matter of time before *ABBA Voyage* changes its course.

Once again, the septuagenerians find themselves leading the music industry in a format that is surely beyond the band’s wildest dreams back when they won Eurovision in 1974. With the flat-pack, purpose-built ABBA Arena’s ability to move around the world, this is a concert that can live on forevermore. *ABBA Voyage* - douze points.

- *The Lion King* isn't just told in English. Songs in *The Lion King* use six different African languages throughout the show, including Zulu, Swahili and Xhosa, representing a variety of African nations and communities.
- Julie Taymor, theatre designer and director, designed the all of the costumes and used carbon fibre to create the animal masks. This made them light enough for the performers to wear, but strong enough to last a while for a long running show.
- In total, there are 232 puppets used in the *The Lion King* in London. The production showcases 25 different species of animals, birds, fish and insects.
- By far, the largest puppet in the show is the Elephant, given the nickname Bertha by the crew. She is 13 foot long and 9 foot wide. It takes four people to work together in order to move the puppet across the Lyceum Theatre's stage.
