A new British musical from writers Jim Barne and Kit Buchan.

Born in Crawley in 1998, Sam Tutty is best known for his West End debut as Evan in *[Dear Evan Hansen](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/15595-dear-evan-hansen)*. He originated the role in London, following in the footsteps of Ben Platt who originated the character of Evan Hansen on Broadway.

Tutty spent the first decade of his life in West Sussex, before moving north to Hull. He later returned down south and attended Imberhorne Secondary School, whose alumni include 9 to 5 star Louise Redknapp. During his school years, he appeared in a number of productions including The Wizard of Oz.

After compulsory schooling, Tutty trained at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, later making his off-West End debut as Daniel in Once on this Island. His performance at Southwark Playhouse was widely praised, and a career in the West End looked promising. Tutty was originally cast as the alternate Evan for Dear Evan Hansen, however he was later promoted to the titular character.

His first performance as Evan was on 9 October 2019, ahead of an official opening night on 19 November 2019. In a review for LondonTheatre.co.uk, Mark Shenton said: “Tutty is another discovery, who pulls off the rare trick of projecting adolescent angst and insecurity with paradoxically confident ease. With his strawberry blonde hair and slight physical bearing, he embodies a nerdy character… There's a truthfulness to his acting - and a robust singing voice - that makes him feel utterly authentic and intensely moving.” In 2020, Tutty won an Olivier for Best Actor in a Musical.

<a href="/show/everybodys-talking-about-jamie">Everybody's Talking About Jamie</a> has just celebrated its 2nd birthday in the West End, a joyous musical about a British teenager embracing and asserting his gay drag identity at a Sheffield school at which he defiantly and unapologetically decides to go to his end of year prom in a dress. But now everybody will also be talking about <a href="/show/dear-evan-hansen">Evan Hansen</a>, another teenager at the centre of a musical, but this one's American and far more emotionally insecure.If <a href="/show/everybodys-talking-about-jamie">Jamie</a>, as both a show and a character, has a refreshing openness of spirit and blissfully defiant lack of apology, <a href="/show/dear-evan-hansen">Dear Evan Hansen</a> has a more earnest sincerity that may be initially cloying to British appetites, as it follows its title character who finds himself, unwittingly at first but then in a scheme that rapidly accelerates out of control, heralded as the best friend of a passing acquaintance at school who has committed suicide. He finds himself trapped in a lie, told initially with the good intention of comforting the boy's bereaved parents, but which soon takes on a life of its own as he needs to produce evidence of their relationship and a memorial campaign in honour of the lost schoolmate is launched.But if it feels a bit manipulative in more ways than one, that may be entirely intentional: it also dares to tackle the subject of teenage suicide head-on, and how the victim's classmates both manipulate and are manipulated by social media to their own ends. What is apparently healing becomes unwittingly sinister.It's not just a musical for the social media age but also puts its alternately productive and pernicious effects on full display.&nbsp; As such, it could not be more welcome.&nbsp; #YouWillBeFound is the hashtag behind the promotion of mental health awareness in the show, and the show itself is now finally to be found in the West End, three years after its 2016 Broadway premiere that saw the show win the 2017 Tony Award for Best Musical (along with five other wins) and where it is still running.In the stunningly slick and sleek production that has arrived at the <a href="/theatres/noel-coward-theatre">Noel Coward Theatre</a>, the show has also found and will make a new star of recent Italia Conti graduate Sam Tutty in the title role. Just as Jac Yarrow last summer graduated from ArtsEd to take the title role in <a href="/show/joseph-and-the-amazing-technicolor-dreamcoat">Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat</a> at the London Palladium (and who has now been announced will reprise it next summer), Tutty is another discovery, who pulls off the rare trick of projecting adolescent angst and insecurity with paradoxically confident ease. With his strawberry blonde hair and slight physical bearing, he embodies a nerdy character (far more successfully, in fact, that Ben Platt who originated the role on Broadway). There's a truthfulness to his acting - and a robust singing voice - that makes him feel utterly authentic and intensely moving.There's lovely complementary work from Rebecca McKinnis as his struggling single mother, with Lauren Ward, Rupert Young and Lucy Anderson as the parents and sister of Connor Murphy, the boy who has committed suicide. As in Next to Normal (also coincidentally directed by Michael Greif), the 2009 Broadway musical still unseen over here, that deceased son has a continuing dominant presence here; as played by Doug Colling, he has a haunting effect in every sense. There are also suitably obnoxious contributions from Jack Loxton and Nicole Raquel Dennis as Evan's classmates who play key roles in assisting him and promoting the campaign.Benj Pasek and Justin Paul's beautiful score may be a little ballad-heavy, but has integrity and depth that matches the story they have to tell, whose book is written by Steven Levenson. An onstage band, on the upper level of the set stage right, under the musical direction of Matt Smith, provides sumptuous accompaniment; there's particularly fine guitar playing from Tom Coppin and Mark Wraith.Just recently Florian Zeller's <a href="/show/the-son">The Son</a> played just down the street at the <a href="/theatres/duke-of-yorks-theatre">Duke of York's</a> that offered another shattering account of a teen suicide; <a href="/show/dear-evan-hansen">Dear Evan Hansen</a> will reach an even bigger audience, and its impact will resonate, hopefully far beyond the theatre's walls.<a href="/show/dear-evan-hansen">Dear Evan Hansen</a>&nbsp;is booking at the&nbsp;<a href="/theatres/noel-coward-theatre">Noel Coward Theatre</a>&nbsp;until 2nd May.&nbsp;<a href="/show/dear-evan-hansen">Dear Evan Hansen tickets</a>&nbsp;are available now.&nbsp;

Review - Dear Evan Hansen at the Noel Coward Theatre

The Noël Coward Theatre opened as the New Theatre on 12 Mar. 1903. In 1973, the theatre’s name was changed from the New Theatre to the Albery Theatre, as a tribute to the theatre’s long-serving manager Sir Bronson Albery. Sir Cameron Mackintosh acquired the theatre through his company, Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, in 2005 and renamed the theatre in memory of the famous playwright, Noel Coward.

The theatre famously played host to two theatre companies whose theatres were destroyed during the Blitz – the [Old Vic](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/old-vic-theatre) and [Sadler’s Wells](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/sadlers-wells) both performed at the theatre until their new theatres were built in the 1950s. 

The theatre also played host to the premiere of Lionel Bart’s world famous musical *Oliver!* The show was a huge success, running for 2,618 performances.

## Noël Coward Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels - Stalls, Royal Circle, Grand Circle and Balcony.

The Stalls offers excellent views throughout. The high setting of the stage allows for good views.

The view from the Royal Circle is completely unobstructed and the seating is well raked.

The Grand Circle is set fairly high, but again offers unobstructed views of the stage. 

Whilst the Balcony is high, the seats are well raked and comfortable with a good amount of legroom.

When the Criterion Theatre first opened in 1873, the space was designed as a concert hall. The Criterion Theatre is the only West End theatre to be situated almost entirely underground — even the Upper Circle is not at street level. 

The Criterion Theatre housed comic opera in its early years, including works by W. S. Gilbert and George Grossmith. A decade after opening, the theatre had to be renovated to meet the Metropolitan Board of Works standards for ventilation. This work also saw the installation of electricity to the theatre. The building surrounding the theatre was extensively rebuilt between 1989 and 1992, but the Victorian auditorium was well-preserved and still stands today. 

Notable shows at the Criterion Theatre include *The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)* by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, the long-running play *The 39 Steps* and Mischief Theatre's *The Comedy About A Bank Robbery*.

## Criterion Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle.

The front rows of the Stalls offers good views of the stage, though the seating is not raked steeply. 

The Dress Circle has specifically designated ‘restricted view’ seats due to the number of pillars supporting the Upper Circle in Row C.

The Upper Circle offers unrestricted theatre views.
